Herniated Disc

What is a herniated disc?

A number of patients who experienced having pain in the back, leg, or experienced weakness in the muscles of the lower part of the body are diagnosed with having a herniated disc. When a herniated disc occurs, the cushion that’s between the spines is pushed away from its regular location.

What usually happens when someone experiences a herniated disc?

A spinal disc may rupture anytime then it will become less elastic. When this happens, a small amount of it pushes away from its normal area—thus resulting to a herniated disc. When a herniated disc breaks out from the middle of the vertebra, the spinal nerve and cord may turn pinched

Here are some symptoms of a herniated disc:

             Numbness/Tingling Sensation

People usually experience impaired feelings which include numbness, tingling, or what they often refer to as "pins-and-needles" sensation.

             Pain (electric shock)

Nerve tension can usually result in altered sensations, frequently encountered as "electric-shock-like" pain. The moment the tension develops at the neck portion (cervical region), the shock descends to the arms, once the tension is at the lower back portion (lumbar region), the shock descends to the legs.

             Muscle Weakness

As a result of the nerve aggravation, brain impulses tend to be disrupted resulting to muscle weakness.

             Bowel/Bladder Difficulties

These are significant symptoms considering that it could possibly be an indication of cauda-equina syndrome, a disorder as a result of a herniated disc. One should consult a doctor right away because this type is a medical emergency and should be taken seriously

Every one of these symptoms is the result of an irritated nerve of the herniated disc usually due to the pressure from the nerves.

Here are some of the treatments for a herniated disc:

Several factors may vary for the types of treatment. These may include:
    • Patient’s symptoms
    • Patient’s age
    • Patient’s activity level
    • Presence of worsening symptoms
    • Patient’s aggravating symptoms
Treatment generally starts with:
  • Activity Adjustment and Proper Rest Periods
The initial treatment is to have enough rest and prevent strenuous activities which may worsen your condition.
  • Cold and Warm Compress
Cold and warm compress is significantly beneficial in alleviating the pain. It helps by soothing the muscles; It can also reduce spasms.
  • Physical Therapy
This type of treatment does not immediately take effect, but it can strengthen the spine muscles of the lower back portion.  Stronger and efficiently balanced muscles can help out control the lower back and lessen the risk.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Medicines
NSAIDs are typically recommended and usually helps to alleviate the pain by decreasing the inflammation.
  • Oral Steroids
Oral steroids are generally helpful in circumstances of a sudden or acute disc herniation. Oral steroids normally include Medrol and Prednisone. These strong anti-inflammatory medicine decreases the inflammation, thus minimizing the symptoms.
  • Other Medicines
These usually include medications for pain management such as narcotics and muscle relaxants. Narcotics are very useful and very potent pain management medication. Narcotics are usually given for only a short time due to its addictive effect. Muscle relaxants are usually used for treating spasms.
·         Inversion therapy
This therapy has become increasingly popular with lower back pain relief.  This therapy involves the use of inversion tables.  The upside down position can allow gravity to pull on our spine, thus relieving the herniated disc and allowing it to return to its normal position.  Aside from that, relief can be gained from having the spine be pulled back by gravity. A highly recommended treatment from chiropractor world wide.
